Twinned with epic platformer elements and graphics akin to Spyro and Banjo-Kazooie, Sly 2 is a cracking game that players of all ages can enjoy…. Band of Thieves boasts a different style of level from the first Sly game, adding enough new features to draw fans back for another bite of the cherry.
Sly, Bentley, and Murray are after pieces of Clockwerk, the antagonist from the first game. Players can choose to use one of the three characters in a number of exciting missions, knocking back guards while watching that all important health bar.
Each character has different skills to help players in their missions. Bentley is stealthy and has computer-hacking skills, Sly can pickpocket guards, and Murray smashes everything in sight. Fans of the first Sly game need to give this a try. Before Destiny and Overwatch, Timesplitters 2 was the go-to-game for multiplayer madness and a storyline that was, quite literally, ahead of its time. Timesplitters 2 has a very Goldeneye-esque feel to it.
Considering that Bond features in our best N64 games ever made, then that can only be a good thing. You play as one of two space marines trying to stop the Timesplitters from messing around with time.
But the best part of this game is undoubtedly the multiplayer. My mates and I had hours and hours of fun playing this game, and you will too! This game sold a whopping 7-million copies. Can you believe that, 7 million! No wonder it features in every list of the best PS2 games of all time. While critics thought these areas might be too much for the standard gamer to cope with, I guess 7-million people proved them wrong. The graphics, storyline execution, gameplay, and characters in this game are second-to-none.
The first God of War game had to be in our list of the best PS2 games! The difference is that Kratos is a vengeful god hellbent on killing, not a Hylian child raised by the Great Deku tree. Wield the dual Blades of Chaos while knocking back insane beasts at every turn.
Rack up killer combos to earn more red orbs from each battle.. Points win prizes, or in this case, red orbs buy upgraded weapons, abilities, and moves, making Kratos even more powerful. The Virtua Fighter series needs no introduction, and Virtua Fighter 4 : Evolution more than does the previous titles in this epic franchise justice. You might have played these titles ever since the early Sega days or first come across the series on our list of the best Dreamcast games.
As well as two new characters and better graphics, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution adds new item collecting features, stores, and ring types.
Dark Cloud 2 takes the 8th spot in this list of the best PS2 games of all time! Using a spanner and a sword, two characters much change the past order to alter the future. Sounds intriguing, right? In Europe, this game is called Dark Chronicle. Features from the first game including the need to retrieve items to rebuild the overworld outside of dungeons and upgrading weapons return in this new game.
Interestingly, Dark Cloud 2 also has a Sim City-style world building mode that players can access after collecting a required amount of Geostones. Ico is a boy who has horns. Likewise, a Princess called Yorda is about to have her essence drained Dark Crystal style, and the two escape to start life on their own. Ico does the majority of the searching and battling and must help Yorda across obstacles like a proper gentleman.
Fans of Greek Mythology will be all over this game. You play as Kratos, the new God of War. Compared to the first God of War title, this game is bigger, tougher, and has way more action. Honestly, this is one of my favourite games of all time, and it was tough choosing where to place it in this list.
It has been ranked as the second best PS2 game of all time by many critics, but this critic has some other favourites that pipped it to the post. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy follows Jak and his friend Daxter, the latter of which happens to get transformed into a cross between an Otter and a Weasel when he comes into contact with some dark magic.
They have to seek a dark sage to try and turn Daxter back into a human again. But as you might have guessed, that is easier said than done. The worlds in this game are one of the main reasons why I love it so much. I still think about the Lurker guards from time to time and exploring these exciting levels. The developers must have undoubtedly had a great time naming this game, and I certainly had a blast replaying it over and over again until I could play the levels with my eyes closed.
Ratchet and Clank marked a move towards a growing trend of shooting games as opposed to the typical platform games of old. This is one of the first games that I went online with back in the day.
Just being able to climb into a vehicle and drive it around is worth the second-hand sales price alone! Yes, Final Fantasy X will forever be a game that changed my life, and thankfully my hair for only a short time which we will never speak of again. The detail in the levels, the fighting, the sub-quests; it was the stuff of legend, and it well and truly blew my mind. And yes, I do remember all of those names from back in the day; I told you this game had a big effect on me.
From RPG battling to showing off your skills in Blitzball, this game had it all and so much more. Be careful; it may cause you to alienate your friends and die your hair… if you have any anymore, that is. Shadow of the Colossus features some of the biggest bosses I have ever come across in any video game. And with beasts like the dude below to encounter, it certainly makes for one hell of a ride! You must travel through a mysterious land finding and defeating Colossi in an attempt to save the life of a mysterious girl.
What a game to end our list of the best PS2 games of all time! Yes, the Number 1 spot deservedly goes to Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater , one of the best stealth adventure games I have ever played.
Everything changed in Snake Eater, however. Something clicked, and I instantly became a tactical machine. I reckon I could have applied for the S. S after completing this game, but writing seemed like a much safer profession. In true PlayStation fashion, this title takes place before all of the other games in the Metal Gear series and is set in Ditching the urban city streets for a soviet jungle theme with hints of that Goldeneye level where you have to dodge Xenia with her AC, MGS3 sees you taking on a mission to destroy a super weapon while saving a rocket scientist.
Everything about it from the graphics to the trademark humour make it a must-have for any PS2 fan. Have we missed out your favourite? Do you want to share your love for your best PS2 games? Condemned wrought that feeling The original Killzone.
I've never felt sick playing a game before, but something about KZ seriously made me almost barf. Couldn't play more than a few minutes of it. Descent multiplayer. Since I actually am sick right now, playing anything with that much swimmy controlling would knock me out.
Deus ex. Then again it's like my first real PC game experience I'm getting motion sickness pretty hard. Dead Space. The zero gravity room makes me nauseous so I will never finish the game. I really wanted to play through the story. I know it happens to some people, I've heard quite a few stories of motion sickness happening to people playing Mirror's Edge or Portal but I have heard of it happening with much older titles as well, personally it's never been a problem for me.
I guess if you grew up with retro games it makes you feel less sick than seeing a whole pixels on one screen not that I don't like advancing technology. Predictably, it only took three minutes from the start of this valid thread for smartasses to just start naming games they don't like. I was always hoping for a 3D Castlevania worth something and this was as close as it got.
God of War — More anger, personality and pure brutality than any PS2 game released before it. But from what I played, it was clear that something revolutionary and NEW was being invented here. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec — It was fun to race my real car because it looked, handled and sounded just like the real deal. Katamari Damacy — Weird, quirky, but totally fresh and highly addictive.
It was a nice break from the more traditional games. Rez — A really innovative idea based on the mix of images, sound and interactivity. It shows that games can become sensual hypnotizing experiences. Okami — Maybe the last major game on PS2, a very unique graphic style and gameplay based on drawing make for a fantastic game with a special mood and atmosphere. Ico and 3. Shadow of the Colossus — Because they are the games I wish that I had made.
Roll on The Last Guardian! Burnout 3: Takedown — Horrible car accidents can be funny, especially when playing this with a group of friends. The people who made that game are as badass as Kratos himself. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando — Tons of guns, dudes to blow up, diverse worlds to visit… and a HUGE mid-game ice world that shattered their standard formula.
The star wanted levels are a game unto themselves. Just an epic game, and so well crafted all around. So addictive, with great style and tracklist. I also loved the sequel, Amplitude. And if you loved cars, this was the game to have: huge and deep, but easy to play.
Why on earth do we not have another one of these for the current generation!? Ico — Wonderful audiovisual design combines with carefully crafted puzzles to deliver an experience that will evoke emotion in any player. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — The sheer amount of different gameplay elements from stealthy burglary missions to gang warfare, and all in a coherent experience.
Devil May Cry — Stylish, fun, and super cool. It felt like I really was living the story. In so many ways, the interactive storytelling that this game brought to the medium has still not been surpassed. A total lost gem. If you can only afford one game in your life, this might be the one to pick up.
Mercenaries — Hijack a tank and take down a statue of the Dear Leader. Hey, you got something better to do with a Saturday afternoon? Culdcept — A love child of Magic the Gathering and Monopoly. Persona 3 — Deep systems, a freaky story, and a very innovative friend system. Plus, it had online co-op way before anyone else. Best movie adaptation ever! Gran Turismo 4 — Everything about this game was highly, highly polished. Growing from the size of a mouse to the size of a planet is incredibly satisfying to me.
TWO Katamari games. What, you say? Well, too bad. I loved them both. I think what I love about them is the way they defy genre definitions. They feature RPG-ish character development and action-adventure story and puzzle-solving…These games are fun to play, witty to watch and just fine entertainment.
I actually had to put the controller down on multiple occasions because I was too scared to keep going. It was an amazing experience start to finish and one that still is relevant almost 10 years later.
Resident Evil 4 — This game has everything and influenced many games that came after it, including the games we make at Naughty Dog. Tim Willits Creative Director, id Software Current Project: Rage Shadow of the Colossus — Taught players and developers that there is more to fighting a boss than firing rockets into them. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty — The defining example of what a PS2 game should be: cinematics, story, action, and setting made this game near perfect.
Silent Hill 2 — The scariest game on the PS2. Great story, setting, and creepy action. A one-of-a-kind experience. Ben Kuchera Gaming Editor, Ars Technica benkuchera Gitaroo Man — To this day one of my favorite rhythm games, and the mechanic of button-presses plus analog direction control has never been replicated. Great music, great aesthetics, and it includes a boss named BEN K.
There is no downside. This is an obvious answer because the game really is that good. Something about putting a plastic bag over someone and beating the living shit out of them was so satisfying. Okay, so maybe I was a little sick in the head. One of my all time favorite series on the PS2 was Grand Theft Auto, and being able to play as a cop instead of a criminal was very satisfying for me.
The city was huge, the missions were fun, and the free roam was great. Frisking random people on the street for drugs or weapons and actually being able to arrest them was more fun than I imagined. While it had plenty of technical problems, it was still one hell of a great time. Never liked them, never gave them a chance really.
It might have been due to the fact the game offered 32 players online so it somewhat drew me in, but once I started playing I was hooked. The teamwork involved, the maps, guns, game modes, everything just felt great. I remember playing this game night and day.
It was probably one of the first FPS that brought me into the genre. At the same time I fucking loved it. Being able to take all sorts of different drugs as a police officer for no apparent reason was some how fun to me.
Maybe it was because each drug change the effect of the player or screen. Seriously, I played this game for months after months. Played it everyday all day non-stop. Once the cheaters took over I began to find enjoyment elsewhere. Which is where 25 To Life comes in. Except you could create your own character, and better yet create your own gang tags. Being able to use a taser online and arrest criminals in-game was something I thought was amazing at the time.
While it may have bombed in terms of reviews, it certainly was a highlight of my time with a PS2. Do you have a game that totally bombed in the review department but you thought was kick ass?
