Posted June 03, I had the same problem, I installed everything minus the other executables, and it took 6 hours. Totally worth it, though, this has got to be the best flight sim I've ever played.
Posted June 05, I just started installing this.. Posted June 07, Took me a few hours yesterday. If you do install everything, it is a lot of data. Posted June 21, Just started installing this last night. I did the full install and it's been running almost 12 hours now and has only downloaded about GB of stuff so far. Though critically appraised, FreeSpace 2 was not a commercial success, largely because of the poor advertisement. Many fans of FreeSpace 1 were actually surprised to hear that FreeSpace 2 had been published because the only real source for this information was through game reviews. There is no FreeSpace 3.
Volition was bought by THQ in , with the licenses remaining with Interplay. Volition couldn't create a new game in the series, and Interplay was not interested in publishing space simulation games because the genre was deemed dead.

Every now and then these improvements are released as a pack called MediaVPs. These assorted improvements enhance the graphics of the game. While screenshots give some idea of what the MediaVPs can do, the best way is to experience them in-game. In Volition released the source code to the world, and it's spawned various mods such as Babylon 5: I've Found Her a total conversion based on the TV series's backstory - ifh.
The excellent work that people have done to make the core game graphically capable in today's gaming climate is utterly incredible, and more importantly totally free for anyone with an internet connection. It's happily playable with a mouse, but to get the feel for the speed and immerse yourself in the space combat, you'll probably want to invest in a good joystick.
Though, to be fair, the top class ones in are probably a tenner now. The thing that sets apart FreeSpace 2 from the rest of the genre is the scale of the thing - you're fighting against gigantic ships that make you look like a giblet in comparison to their mighty guns, and, yes, you have to blow them up.
